I liked this book. Delsie is our heroine, an impoverished schoolteacher and utterly alone with no family who acknowledges her. The brother-in-law of the local lord sees Delsie walking down the street and decides he loves her. He asks her to marry him the first time they meet. She is astounded and assumes the proposal stems from his being inebriated. Naturally, she refuses. However, months later, Delsie does marry him and this story recounts how this comes about and how Delsie has an adventure, finds a loving family, and becomes a mother. I loved all the characters, even the slovenly housekeeper and her sneaky husband. This is a sweet read, with romance and mystery.Product details

Delsie edition by Joan Smith Romance eBooks Reviews
The exact Regency I enjoy...a bit of humor, feisty heroine... The hero who is sometimes overbearing....smugglers...all's well in the end...a good one...
Loved every minute of the book..I've read so many of Joan's book and this is one of my favorites. Loved it!
this will remind people of a Heyer novel. Like the HEyer novel, this is one of the best by Smith. Read both! I enjoyed Delsie, a sort of Cinderella story from the start. All the characters were likable, except the housekeeper and her husband! Full of fun.
This is a cute story about an overworked schoolmistress, a deathbed marriage and some smugglers. The characters are well drawn and even though there aren't many surprises the author manages to hold your interest with a little adventure and some witty dialogue. Fans of Heyer will love Delsie!
I have read many of Jones Smith's books and this is probably my least favorite. The main character, Delsie, at first was likable, a well brought up young woman, of good lineage, but recently impoverished and working as a schoolteacher. As soon as the romance started, she became whiny and witch- like. Why someone would have fallen in love with her, when she made extremely exaggerated complaints, I could not understand. I completed this book not because I was enjoying it but simply to complete it because I had started it. Not a good use of time.
I really enjoy many of Joan Smith's books. There have been the odd few that I would never look at again, but most of them will warrant a future read-through. I appreciate that her books are clean and still fun
I actually really enjoyed this one. I. Felt that, though approached somewhat subtly, the reader can definitely see the feelings developing. There is some fun bantering between the H/H. The heroine's stubborn attitude near the end, did annoy me a little, but it was minor. I love Georgette Heyer's novel, The Reluctant Widow, and there is no denying some striking similarities.
I absolutely recommend this book. Especially if you enjoy Joan Smith books.
Delsie was born of a genteel family but hard times and pride kept her mother from going to relatives when her husband died. Eventually, Mama died and Delsie had nowhere else to turn but to the local village school - St. Mary's Parish School - where she obtained a job as a teacher. Life had always been hard for Delsie because she was socially above the villagers and somewhat below the local gentry due to poverty - therefore, she had no friends nor companions.
Eventually, one of local gentry - Mr. Grayshott - found himself in need of a wife and he became enamored with Delsie - actually, obsessed might be a better word. He immediately approached Delsie and asked her to marry him. She, being somewhat in shock, soundly rejected him. He had been married to the local Baron DeVigne's sister. A few months pass and it seems Mr. Grayshott is not healthy and is expected to pass within a few days. Baron DeVigne and his aunt want to have charge of Mr. Grayshott's young daughter but as it stands, Grayshott has appointed another uncle as guardian of the niece. DeVigne knows of Grayshott's fascination with Delsie so decides to request Delsie's cooperation in marrying Grayshott for the sake of the niece. For Delsie's part, she will have a daughter to raise and will have 5,000 pounds settled upon her. Delsie reluctantly agrees.
Once Grayshott passes, Delsie begins to hear strange noises at night near the cottage where she lives on the DeVigne property and then finds several bags filled with money. Amid these unusual circumstances, she and DeVigne become better acquainted and a sweet romance takes off. I enjoyed this sweet Joan Smith story.
